Joel and Roxy's New Friend

8/1/2018

Roxanna and I (Joel) have adopted a new pet, and for the time being she will live in our Vancouver classroom, a ball python. This snake was neglected and the picture here doesn't show it, but she is primarily skin and bones (for now) from being chronically underfed by a previous owner. When we first got her she was starving, striking at anything that moved inside or outside the aquarium.
In the coming weeks Roxy and I hope to get her back on target to recover lost weight and hopefully work on training to avoid striking at people.  For now though recognize this snake has been through some trauma, if you are close to it, it is possible (though unlikely) that it could bite you.  They can strike roughly 1/2 their body length and are much faster than any human reaction. Please don't let your face get close to her and avoid tapping on the glass of the aquarium when visiting. Make slow movements only. Fast motions scare her and she may become defensive. This snake has had a hard life and needs some kind people around her. With time she will probably become a great pet and be safe to handle, but be patient.

How big does a female ball python get?  Up to 5 or 6 feet long, but it is likely the lack of care in her youth will leave this lady stunted.

Is it dangerous if it bites you?  Keep it away from faces and there is no significant risk. It isn't venomous, it does have teeth, but not fangs.  You probably wouldn't need to do much more than wash the bite with soap and water to get it to heal quickly. Snakes sometimes will hold on after biting.  If it does this a little hand sanitizer in the corner of its mouth will encourage it let go quickly.

What's the name?  Stay tuned, we're working on that.

Firmly Planted Beekeeping Classes

6/28/2018

Today for beekeeping at the Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center students looked into a hive showing signs of disease.

Picture
Under the guidance of Eli Thompson, our bee expert a learning opportunity emerged.  In this case they pulled dead pupae out of the comb with tweezers to diagnose the disease.  This particular hive was caught in the wild and students discovered it has sacbrood, a virus which kills some pupae just prior to being capped and turning into adult bees.  Want to take a beekeeping class at the Homeschool Center? Parents and kids can take the class together!  The next opportunity to sign up is spring 2019.  Join our Facebook group for updates.
