right here in the Pacific Northwest!
After our tour of the bay and getting the big picture we will float over the some eel grass and sand dollar beds at a high slack tide. This will provide the opportunity for those who want to to exit the boat and snorkel floating a few feet off the bottom alongside the boat (if you bring a snorkel, fins, mask and a wetsuit). Those who choose to snorkel may see small fish, sand dollars, clams, cockles, oysters, crabs, moon snails and more. If you choose to stay on board the boat we will bring many of these creatures up to you!
After lunch we head back out again to another location where we can jump in and sweep eelgrass beds, the nursery of the bay, with "D" nets. We should find lots of shrimp, crabs, and young fish. Unfortunately we are also likely to find invasive European green crab, which will still provide a great learning opportunity. Who knows, if we are really lucky perhaps our nets will even yield a pipefish. They are like a stretched out seahorse!
About this time the tide will be low so it is time to hop back in the boat and zip back over to the exposed sand dollar beds and mud flats. There we will teach about clams and you'll get a chance to pump shrimp. If you purchase an Oregon shellfish license in advance you could even try your hand at clamming and we might find a Lewis' Moon Snail, the largest snail species in the Pacific Northwest. On our way back to the boat find a sand dollar shell (called a test) to collect as a keepsake!
At this point we have packed a lot into a fantastic day and it is time to head back. On the way back we will drop by the local harbor seal community for a quick visit. Our boat will drop you off on a sandy beach near your vehicles where you can stick around and play, perhaps bring marsh mallows to roast and S'mores fixing to end the perfect day before heading home.
Please register by adding the number of people joining us to your cart above and checking out.
