Meet Our Teacher: Dr. Bonnie Surmi

Picture
As a freshman in high school, I was confronted with evolution in biology class. Supplied with creation science books from my dad’s extensive library, I began my quest to understand science as a Christian. I continued that pursuit during college, earning a degree in biochemistry at Biola University in California. With both of my parents being teachers, I knew from age seven that I, too, wanted to teach.

With teaching as my primary goal, I attended graduate school at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, specializing in molecular physiology (I studied how organs communicate with each other). At Vanderbilt I learned the challenging—and often tedious—work of doing science in a research lab.
After graduation from Vanderbilt, I had the joy of teaching a biomedical technology program for adults. During the program, the students grew fluorescent bacteria, examined their own blood under the microscope, designed equipment for experiments, and interned with various biomedical companies. Upon leaving Tennessee, I moved to Vancouver and taught community college and high school courses in biology and chemistry. Each time I teach, I look for creative ways to make learning hands-on and to engage our natural curiosity about God’s amazing world.

My husband Benjamin and I have three children and are currently homeschooling. I am excited to discover the world around us with the youth at Glen’s Gizmos!
