Elementary Hands-On History / Tues 11:00-12:00

$84.00
My name is Melissa Draszt, I am a mom of three sweet boys that I’ve homeschooled for 9 years. I enjoy teaching history through fun interactive projects that foster a relaxed learning environment, while utilizing problem solving and communication skills, they see their ideas come to life.

In Hands on History class we step back in time to experience historical events, figures and cultures through short lessons and fun hands-on activities. Our goal is to find a love and curiosity for history through creativity and fun!

In class we will have 6-week sessions where students will have an opportunity to work individually and in groups to create fun projects each week that include crafts, food and games. If you have taken this class with me before you are welcome to take it again! Some of the units may be repeats, but this is a great way to review history and get some class time.

Some topics we have covered in the past include:
  • Vikings
  • Native American Culture
  • Stonehenge
  • Helen Keller
  • Albert Einstein
  • The Wright Brothers
  • Colonial History
  • The Great Pyramids
  • Middle Ages
  • Early Settlers
  • Ancient Rome
  • Ancient China

Ham Radio 101 11-18 years / Wed 3:30-4:30pm

$112.00

Ham, or amateur radio, is a fun and social way to build knowledge of basic electronics, wave science, radio art and more. Entry level ham operator licenses are granted under FCC rule and open up a wide world of communications possibilities which can be a great personal and family hobby as well as lifesaving in emergency situations.

The goal of this class is to prepare students to pass the Ham Technician license exam which grants the right to transmit on Ham Radio frequencies. Youth who are currently licensed will be available during the class to help prepare and answer questions. In addition, we plan to host a live time on the radio for students to listen in as ham operators talk about some of the exam questions and share what it’s like to be a Ham Operator. Parents are highly encouraged to attend and sign up to take the exam with their students. Whether to be prepared for alternate means of communication if needed, or just to learn more about the radio art and become an active participant, come take this class and get licensed!

Costs to become a licensed Ham Operator may include: AARL exam fee - $15. A basic inexpensive handheld ham radio may be purchased on Amazon for under $50-$80. AARL test manual is $32 (optional), and/or a free app which is a great study guide and test prep!
